“I didn’t vote for this.” Albertans are speaking out on no-fault auto insurance. It isn’t pretty.

Ever since the Alberta government announced it was giving no-fault auto insurance another look, FAIR Alberta has been flooded with messages, comments and emails from Albertans who are speaking their minds about the proposal.

Ever since the Alberta government announced it was giving no-fault auto insurance another look, FAIR Alberta has been flooded with messages, comments and emails from Albertans who are speaking their minds about the proposal.

Some Albertans are clearly angry that everyone in a no-fault system is treated the same from good drivers to speeders to drunk drivers. Here is a sampling of these comments (we’re only using first names to protect identities).

“There is always fault on a car crash, someone was driving to fast not paying attention was drunk was following to closely was driving way too fast in a snow storm. No fault is a complete crock of shit.”
 Dan

“Say NO to no fault Insurance this is what will happen if a drunk driver hits your car , both drivers will pay their deductible and your damage will be covered under your policy and your insurance rate will increase to cover the cost and the drunk driver gets to keep driving as nothing took place.”
Ariella

“This doesn’t lead to safer drivers or more accountable actions behind the wheel. Just higher rates for everyone.”
Logan

Conservative supporters of the Premier Jason Kenney are amongst those most upset. Many of these folks see the one-size-fits-all, no personal responsibility aspect and large bureaucracy required to administer no-fault as an example of socialism.

“No fault car insurance is a terrible idea. It just a way of washing out damages against a larger pool of payees, it does not enforce accountability or responsibility. Just another socialist concept to get everyone to pay equal and not have to deal with those who should be paying more.”
Barry

“The UCP shows their liberal roots, oh ya Kenney is an old lib kid.”
Frank

“If you vote in “No Fault” insurance, you will not, NOT get my vote next election!!!!!”
Doreen

Some noted that private, no-fault insurance – where tried, like in Ontario is more expensive than the at-fault system.

“In 2015 I used to pay 275 a month for a 1994 ford tempo living in Ontario. Clean record. When I moved here I was shocked that it was only 75 a month. If this is what you want then let them do this to us.”
Jordan

The Alberta government committed to hearing from the public through consultation on whether to move forward with no-fault auto insurance. It appears Albertans can’t wait for that opportunity.
